Corporal Scott Holmes joined the Vermilion Police Department on 11/10/01. Cpl. Holmes was chosen by Chief Hartung to become the newest K-9 Handler after Cpl. Richard Grassnig retired with his K-9 “Pia”.
K-9 “Andy” came to the VPD on April 1st 2011. Andy was imported directly from Germany and is a German Shepherd. Andy was born on 04/06/08 in Hinterschlob, Germany. Andy was raised in Germany to become a Police K-9.
Andy’s given German name is Mailo Vom Hinterscholb. Andy was given his “American” name in memory of Sandusky Police Officer Andrew Dunn. Officer Dunn was shot and killed in the line of duty on 03/19/11.
Cpl. Holmes and Andy are certified through the Ohio Police Officers Training Council in the areas of Narcotics, Tracking, and Patrol Duties. Cpl. Holmes and K-9 Andy continue to train regularly and will recertify with the OPOTC yearly.
All of the initial purchase and equipment funding for the newest K-9 Unit was paid for with the generous donations from area businesses, organizations and residents.
The K-9 Unit is a road patrol unit and has all the duties associated with the VPD Patrol Division. The K-9 Unit is utilized to support this unit. The K-9 is used for numerous different jobs; including the search for illegal drugs, tracking fleeing suspects, K-9 demonstrations, and mutual aid to surrounding agencies.
The Vermilion Fraternal Order of Police has set up a K-9 Donation Fund to support the current and future VPD K-9 Units. All donations area greatly appreciated and are used to assist the K-9 Unit with the purchase of equipment and future dogs.
