When school begins each fall, children encounter many hazardous situations
for the first time.
For that reason, the Vermilion Fraternal Order of Police has sponsored Safety
Town each summer since 1974.
Safety Town is a ten-day class in safety education open to all children who will be
attending kindergarten in September. Under guidance, they practice and experience
"real life" situations before being confronted with the situation in their life. Instruction
includes pedestrian, motorist, bus, fire, railroad crossing, bicycle, toy, playground,
drug and general home safety as well as a field trip to the police station. Safety Town
is actually a miniature town built to the scale of a small child and has buildings, streets,
sidewalks, crosswalks, vehicles, traffic signs and a traffic light. It is in the small town
where the children practice what they learn in our classrooms.
Safety Town classes are held Monday through Friday for two weeks, at South Street
School. There are two separate sessions: 9:30AM to 11:30AM and 1:00PM to 3:00PM.
Safety Town usually is held the two weeks immediately after the school's summer
break begins, this is middle to late June each year.
Safety Town is funded by donations from local businesses and citizens. A small
registration fee is also charged to assist in funding this program. Should anyone
wish to make a donation it can be sent to, Vermilion Safety Town, 5791 Liberty
Ave., Vermilion, Ohio 44089.
